Óbidos - Historical Town

obidos

The magnificent historical town of Óbidos, located some 80 km Northwest of Lisbon, only a few kilometres away from the Atlantic Ocean, is one of the most beautiful and picturesque sites of the Iberian Peninsula.

Founded by the Celts in 308 BC, Óbidos was conquered by the Romans in the first century and occupied by the Moors in the eighth century. The latter built the town wall, which still today is completely intact surrounding the white washed houses painted with blue or yellow bars.

The medieval town of Óbidos with its castle, churches and historic monuments, is blessed with a moderate climate where the warm southern sunshine mingles with a cool mountain breeze.

The natural enchantment of Óbidos, the traditional hospitality of its inhabitants and the Portuguese regional culinary delights including fresh seafood and local wines turn this place into a must for any tourist visiting Portugal.
